Despite her very high IQ, excellent memory, and extensive knowledge of the arcane, Morgan makes a series of basic legal mistakes that anyone who has ever watched a TV law show would know not to make
Scenario
It follows Morgan, a single mother of three, and how, thanks to her exceptional mind, she is able to help solve a crime while reorganizing evidence during her shift as a police department cleaner. HPI series (2021).
Remake of HPI (2021)
In the first episode, for example, she obtains a document from a locked safe in a victim-suspect’s law office that would never be admissible in court—evidence obtained illegally. It also could not be used to obtain other evidence—violating the legal doctrine of “fruit of the poisonous tree.” In Episode #2, she must be reminded to wear gloves before handling evidence at the crime scene, and in #3, she removes all documented evidence from the police station, completely breaking the chain of custody and making everything she took no longer admissible in court.
The comedy is woven into her delivery, as is the irony of her French take
Looking back on her TV resume away from Always Sunny and past her role in The Mick, Olson glides onto the screen in a not-so-shot-for-shot remake of this French procedural, but she’s definitely vibing with it. Tell Olson she was drawn to this project for the way it portrays a feisty, empowered, capable woman.
The first episode is well-done, though the editing could use some work
What this series does best is keep you captivated by a seasoned cast led by Judy Reyes, whose stern eyes and soft voice invite the audience to develop a sense of empathy for the players her character cares about rallying around her in pursuit of justice. The series would be buoyed by more scenes between Reyes and Olson.
