Scenario
Ana, Patricia and Mayela grew up when sexuality was taboo. Now channeled as a 65-year-old woman, the protagonist revisits intertwined memories, secrets and desires, giving voice to unspoken past experiences. Official submission of Costa Rica for the “Best International Feature Film” category at the 97th Academy Awards in 2025.
The experiences portrayed were not mine
I expected it to get better, but it didn’t. I am a little older than the women portrayed; perhaps I was lucky and had more choices. But if you are going to make a work of art, you need more than just recording.
There were no layers, just boring memories
How about holding these institutions accountable for this oppression? Reflecting on who or what might be responsible? What about the role of the church?
What about the economic/political context?
What about the role of the family? The issues raised have already been addressed exhaustively in many films, novels and documentaries. We need insights now, not just memories.
